The story of the brave and wise Abigail has always fascinated me. How she rides out to David and begs him for mercy.

And every time the raisin bread is mentioned, I imagine her having it freshly made, wrapping it up still warm and fragrant and setting off.

And David’s men, hungry and exhausted, how delicious the fresh bread had been.

The aromatic bread is mentioned several times in the Bible. It was offered especially during sacrifices in the temple. It was called “Shabbat sacrificial bread” and was a sacred offering that was brought before God. The bread was very popular because of its shelf life and fruity taste. The raisins in the dough stood for fertility and God’s blessing.

The well-known story is that of Abigail. In 1 Samuel 25, Abigail prepares a great feast to appease David and avoid conflict. It was a symbol of hospitality, gratitude and wisdom.

The Bible text describes it like this:
“And Abigail hastened, leaping on a donkey, with five virgins at her side, whom she had loaded with the gifts she had prepared. And she went in haste and came to David, and he met her.” (1 Samuel 25:20)

It is clear from this passage that the bread and the offerings were part of an important banquet that showed that God’s blessing could be relied upon.

Ingredients

  • 500 Gramm Mehl (Typ 550)

  • 100 Gramm Zucher

  • 1 PK Trockenhefe

  • 250 ml warmes Wasser

  • 50 ml Olivenöl

  • 1 Stk Ei

  • 150 Gramm Rosinen

  • 1 Prise Salz

  • Optiomal: Zimt, Kardamon

Directions

  • Die Hefe im warmen Wasser mit einem Teelöffel Zucker auflösen und 10 Minuten ruhen lassen.
  • Mehl, Zucker, Salz und Gewürze in eine große Schüssel geben. Das Ei, Olivenöl und die Hefemischung hinzufügen.
  • Alles zu einem glatten Teig verkneten. Die Rosinen vorsichtig unterheben.
  • Den Teig abdecken und eine Stunde an einem warmen Ort gehen lassen.
  • Den Teig in eine gefettete Kastenform geben. Weitere 30 Minuten ruhen lassen.
  • Im vorgeheizten Ofen bei 180 °C ca. 35-40 Minuten backen. Bis das Brot goldbraun ist.
  • Das Brot auskühlen lassen, in Scheiben schneiden und servieren.

  • Fazit
    Dieses Rosinenbrot war im alten Israel ein bedeutendes Opfer und ein wichtiger Bestandteil religiöser Zeremonien. Es symbolisierte Dankbarkeit und den Segen Gottes. Auch heute erinnert uns dieses Brot an die Kraft alter Traditionen und an die Bedeutung von Opfergaben im Glauben.
