Fish can bite, but they don’t have to

I am downright embarrassed to admit that the first attempts at fishing on the Sea of Galilee were unsuccessful. Instead, we watered fishing lures and spread food around the lake. It didn’t help that I ran deeper and deeper into the lake until the water was up to my chest. What’s the point of all that ambition if the fish won’t bite?

I spent an entire night sitting on the shore of the lake. Nothing could be done. At the same time, I remembered an experience the disciples had with Jesus on the Sea of Galilee. The Bible says in Luke 5:5: “And Simon answered and said to him, ‘Master, we have been working all night and have caught nothing, but at your word I will cast the net. Jesus asked them to try again. The net was so full that it almost broke.

“Just don’t give up now!” I thought. And indeed! An hour or two later, a bite followed. The fishing bell snapped me out of my stupor and adrenaline shot through my body. “There’s finally one on the line!” I didn’t want to miss out on this fish. In my mind’s eye, I imagined how we would eat a tasty fresh dish as a family. I imagined my wife taking a photo of me and sending it to my father-in-law.

But reality caught up with me. When I reeled in the rod and saw what was hanging on the hook, I laughed out loud.

The fish was so small that I didn’t even want to take a photo at first. I released it into the wild. I was awake for the rest of the night, but no more fish came.

It can happen, but it doesn’t have to

“Success can be planned”, as one advertisement says. I think that was also my credo for many years. I unconsciously incorporated it into my leisure activities. “Results-oriented fishing? Who needs that?”, I think to myself today. Neither I nor my wife are interested in catch quotas. We enjoy every moment at the lake, even if we go home without any fish. We rest, listen to the small waves on the shore, we talk, we keep quiet, we enjoy the incredible landscape and atmosphere. If a fish bites, our excitement rises. Fishing on the Sea of Galilee remains unique, whether you catch anything or not. ….

Sometimes it also helps to simply change the beach :D.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
